Firearms Training

Applied Ballistics is your headquarters for Firearm Education.  Whether you are an experienced shooter, or a novice, we have the course for you.  We offer a wide range of curriculum including, but not limited to:

At Applied Ballistics, we believe in safety first. All of our classes are conducted on site by qualified firearm instructors with full credentials and years of experience.

We encourage students to use their own firearm and ammunition during most classes (Introduction to Shooting only uses Applied Ballistics equipment). However, rental guns are available upon request with purchase of ammunition.

Instructors Meet Your Trainers

Aaron coaches the Purdue University Pistol Team, is a former officer of the Lafayette Police Department, holds an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy certification as a firearms instructor, is a certified Master Firearms Instructor through Rangemaster, and a certified Urban Rifle Instructor through Defense Training International. Aaron is the General Manager at Applied Ballistics and competes in multiple shooting disciplines including USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge, Rimfire Falling Steel, Indiana Multigun, and NRL22. Aaron is a USPSA Grand Master, a Steel Challenge Grand Master, and an IDPA Master class shooter. He has a National Championship title in Rimfire Falling Steel as well as several State Championship titles in IDPA and Steel Challenge.  Aaron is the Match Director for Steel Challenge at Wildcat Valley Rifle

Drew is a former Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Deputy and holds an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy certification as a firearms instructor. Drew is also a very active competitive shooter and primarily competes in USPSA and Indiana Multigun while still occasionally shooting several other series like IDPA and Steel Challenge. Drew is a USPSA Grand Master and an IDPA Master class shooter. He regularly travels to compete at the regional and national level in USPSA and has a State Championship title in Indiana IDPA.

Introduction to Shooting Course

Description: This is the perfect class for the curious or future gun owner looking to dip their toes in.This beginner course is geared towards new shooters who want to understand the basics of firearms and shooting.
During this introductory lesson you will learn how to safely handle firearms and become familiar with basic terminology. We will cover fundamental topics such as the various reasons people own guns and shoot, as well as cover personal responsibility for safety whenever handling firearms. You will receive hands on experience with stance, grip, sight picture, and other marksmanship fundamentals with supervised life fire on the range.
Cost: $50 Pre-Registration and Prepayment Required
Length: Approximately 2 Hour

Handgun Marksmanship Fundamentals

Description: This course is intended for the shooter who is looking for the next step in training after our Intro to Shooting Class, or those who have shooting experience with no formal instruction.
In this class you will learn fundamentals of grip, stance, sight picture, and trigger control. Instructors help diagnose and improve shooting errors, as well as building good habits and skills with drills.
Cost: $80 Pre-Registration and Prepayment required.
Length: Approximately 2 Hours

Introduction to Defensive Pistol

Description: This beginner level defensive pistol course focuses primarily on teaching a shooter to deliver multiple hits on a close range target in rapid succession.  The core of defensive pistol use is being able to get hits quickly at close range and that is exactly what this class teaches.

Students will learn to shoot from the low ready (no holster needed for the intro class).  The goals will be to learn rapid sight acquisition and first shot while learning recoil control techniques to minimize the time needed for subsequent accurate shots.

Defensive Pistol 1 – Fundamentals

Description: Defensive Pistol 1 covers the fundamental skills of drawing from concealment and reloading.  This class operates with time pressure to teach students to accomplish shooting tasks in a limited amount of available time.
Cost: $80 Pre-Registration and Prepayment required.
Length: Approximately 2-3 Hours
Round Count: 130-150 Rounds
Prerequisites: Intro to Defensive Shooting (or equivalent)

Defensive Pistol 3 – Beyond the Basics

Description: Defensive Pistol 3 Introduces the student to one handed shooting (strong and weak hand) and a variety of skills testing drills to evaluate and improve performance.  This is the class where the speed and accuracy requirements for the skills assessment become very challenging for most experienced shooters.
Cost:  $95 Pre-Registration and Prepayment required.
Length:  3 Hours
Round Count:  300-350 rounds
Prerequisite:  Defensive Pistol 2 (or Equivalent)

Defensive Pistol 4 – Advanced Skills

Description: Defensive Pistol 4 is our first advanced level course.  This class will introduce students to divided attention and moving while shooting.  This is not a beginner class.
Cost: $95 Pre-Registration and Prepayment Required
Length: 2 hours
Round Count: 130-150 rounds
Prerequisite:  Defensive Pistol 3 (or equivaltent)
